The times that our septic alarm has gone off are when family have been visiting. The septic guy said the Achille’s heel of it all is that for the size of house we have, the area we have for a leech field is surprisingly small. Meaning our septic system isn’t really the appropriate size for our house and if there’s more water going through it than absolutely necessary, we’re probably going to have issues.

This is my first experience ever with a septic system and it appears some behavior modification will be taking place to avoid another costly ($395) pumping. There will no longer be a “laundry day” and instead I’ll need to spread out the laundry loads throughout the week to prevent too much water from entering the tank at any one time. Today is the exception. Today we’re trying to get some water back into the tank again and laundry and long showers were recommended. As much as it pains me to waste water, it’s a necessary evil in this case. (I say pains me as I’ve been trying to save money and looking at rain barrels.)

That septic issue I posted about last week was finally resolved today. The guy from the wastewater company just finished pumping our septic system.
