Here we are, the second day in June and we had to turn the heater back on this morning. It’s cloudy, windy, and rainy. It’s 48 and feels like 40. Even with Colorado’s notoriously strange weather, this is weird. A year ago this week, we were in St. John. That I could deal with again!

Bang bang

A bulleted post which gets you up to date.

My dad got pneumonia soon after returning from Florida. We canceled my Grandma’s trip that was scheduled Memorial Day weekend because he was being treated for the flu and didn’t find out that it wasn’t the flu (or swine flu, and thus not contagious) until later. Wouldn’t have made for the best trip anyway. Including the call to cancel the ticket (and thus retain some credit), three calls have been made to Delta. Sunday, after hours trying to find the most convenient schedule for the least amount of money (Delta’s change fee is $150), I finally got her new ticket issued. He feels much better now and was back to work last week!
Casey’s dad visited for Memorial Day weekend. It was his first time seeing Brady and I’m pretty sure he’s smitten! It was a quick trip for him but we had a very relaxing time while he was here and for the most part just stayed at home and had a lot of BBQ for our meals.
The 26th was our anniversary – 8 years, 2 dogs, and a baby!
The dogs are still fighting. In the last two weeks Stoli’s been to the vet once and Dude twice from fight related injuries. Stoli’s ears have had a lot of gunk in them for about a month now. I’ve been cleaning them and got the gunk cleared/dried up only to have it come back again. Apparently she had a pretty bad ear infection which we think has resulted in some hearing loss. The vet put her on antibiotics and two different ear washes to hopefully clear up the problem. That part wasn’t related to the fight but she also had to have a blood pustule in her ear drained because that’s where Dude attacks first. Her ears are just a mess and full of scar tissue. Dude was seen because Stoli bites Dude’s tail when they fight and a couple of weeks ago she bit his tail and it left a hole which got infected. The vet ran a blood culture and apparently it turned into a pretty nasty staph infection but with anti-inflamatories and antibiotics things are looking pretty good. The hair growing back on his tail is the least of our worries. We’re really praying that the infection hasn’t reached the bone and things stay looking good because a tail amputation was mentioned as a worst case scenario.
Brady’s been working on sitting up by herself. She can do it for a few seconds unsupported but she leans quite a bit when she does it. Hopefully we can work with her on this and she’ll be doing it by herself in no time! Off to tummy time…

Dexter

We’ve been getting into Dexter recently. We finished up disc 3 of season 1 right before right before bed last night. And right as there was a twist. Boo! We spent the day wishing Netflix would add more content to the Watch Instantly feature so this wouldn’t happen.

Sleepy

Today was a sleepy day for me. I just felt tired and kind of out of it probably because it was warm and pretty overcast in the afternoon. Brady had a sleepy day too but for her that meant several hour plus naps. Hopefully this is a growth spurt (physical or developmental) because the increased fussiness has been going on for almost a week now and I worry (mostly unnecessarily, but still).

Since last Saturday when Casey smoked his first brisket, he’s been itching to smoke another one. We went to the store last night but they were out and told us to check back this morning. So before Brady even woke me up, Casey had already gone back to the store where there was still no brisket and to Wal-Mart where he found a HUGE (12 pound) brisket (surprisingly a pretty good cut) at a great price! As much as we loathe Wal-Mart, I’m thinking we’ll be buying our brisket there from now on. For dinner we had the family over for brisket, baked beans, and fried okra. I didn’t check, but I hope there’s leftovers!

The Dude

The Dude turned 2 years old on Wednesday! It’s hard to believe he’s only two. He was only 8 pounds at 8 weeks when we brought him home. Now he’s a stocky 72!

Beans

Brady had her first veggie on Monday – green beans! I can’t tell if she liked it or not but she ate it which I’ll take as a good sign. We’re supposed to wait 4-5 days between foods so that we can identify an allergy more easily if a problem emerges. So far so good! We finished the jar of green beans yesterday which ended up working out perfectly at 4 days so today Brady had squash. Either she’s getting more used to the whole eating solids thing or she liked the squash better than the green beans because she ate most of what I portioned out for her. After this, I’m going to try and work in either bananas or pears before going back to veggies again. I need to start giving her rice cereal again in addition to the veggies, but have yet to feed her from the spoon twice in one day thus far. But tomorrow’s a new day, right?

5 months

Brady was 5 months old today! Can you believe it? She’s come so far and definitely doesn’t know the meaning of the word preemie. In the last week or so she’s started “talking” more and louder. It’s so cute! I swear she said hi today after I kept saying it to her but Casey says it doesn’t count so for now we’ll just keep waiting. I forget if I posted this already so if I have you’re just going to hear it again, we’re trying to get her to say Google. She already says goo all the time but how much money could we make if she could say Google?! Is that a college fund I smell?

Solids

We started Brady on solid food last week. Well, sort of. It’s a soupy mix of rice cereal and milk. Feeding it to her is super messy and she’s not too fond of it yet. We’ll keep up with this for awhile longer and hopefully get her to eating more before starting her on veggies. For now, it’s fun to give her another option for nutrition.
