Mandrake 9.1 Finally

I finally got Mandrake 9.1 up and running on my print server and special thanks to Kevin for gimping me along on getting my soundcard working.

A Screenshot of my desktop

For some reason it is really slow copying data across Samba shares from my PVR to my PRNTSRV. I will have to look into it. I thought we would never get my soundcard working. It is a very old Diamond Sonic Impact, Diamond got bought out by Creative years ago, so there were never drivers released for Linux, thus they had to be reverse engineered. So after much turmoil we found a forum post with some commands to force the driver to be used even though it was compiled with GCC 2 while my kernel is compiled with GCC 3. Bleh

We just got back from the gym, so we are eating a late lunch. I have a roast in the crock pot right now so we will have a tasty dinner ready in about 4 hours, and I think we still have 9 movies to watch.

We are still broke so we can’t go see any movies until next week. Grrrr. There are a pantload of movies that I want to see at the theater,Dreamcatcher, The Core, Head of State and Tears of the Sun. I guess Kelly and I will have to pack a lunch next week and do some theater hopping.

My mind is a complete blank.

MMM Fresh ISOs like MOM used to burn.

My quest for Mandrake 9.1 ISO images is almost complete. I finally got hooked to a mirror and am getting decent bandwidth from them. I still have BitTorrent running in the background just in case I lose my connection to them. So tomorrow after we get back from the gym I’m gonna load Mandrake on the print server and see if I can get everything working. Mandrake 9.1 includes ZeroConf which Apple calls Rendezvous so getting the printer hooked to the Powerbook won’t be a problem, but I’m gonna have to look into sharing it with my laptop since it is still running XP (for the time being anyway). I also picked up Solaris 9 for X86 this evening. I’m kind of disappointed that Sun started charging for Star Office, apparently they have really good filters for Microsoft Office files. I only hope that I will have some luck with OpenOffice, and perhaps the CrossOver Plugin assuming I can find my copy of Office 2000.

I was a big pussy at the gym today, I was only able to sit on the bike for about 40 minutes today. I was just felling like crap. So tomorrow I’m gonna have to make up for it, although tomorrow is a weight day not a cardio day.

We still haven’t gone to the movies yet, I’m dying (you wish) to see Dreamcatcher and more importantly Final Flight of the Osiris because the first Matrix sequel picks up from where Osiris ends with the Robots trying to bore a hole into the Earth to reach Zion. So I have to go check that out.

Here is an obligatory link to Justin’s web site. It seems that he isn’t getting any referrals from our site. In case you didn’t click on it the first time here it is again, and again, and again.

OK its time to go to bed.

Moving?

The waiting is over…it has been decided that we are not moving to Las Vegas. After a lot of talking and a lot of work with the calculator, it seems with the different circumstances that we are going to have to work around, it will be about the same cost for us in the long run to stay here. While it might have been nice to have a change of scenery, the support system we have here would not be available out there. So Casey will start going to P.P.C.C. part time in the summer and fall semesters and then will go full-time in the spring semester, providing nothing comes up. I will be starting U.C.C.S. in the fall and am going to start jumping through their bullshit hoops pretty soon. I haven’t applied yet but with their low admissions criteria, I don’t think I’m going to have a problem. As far as school is going right now, this week is spring break. Not that that means a whole lot to me. I’m not going anywhere and I still have assignments due in my biology class. Instructors should not be allowed to do that. What’s wrong with them?

We got back from the gym not too long ago. It’s been over 2 weeks and we’re still dedicated. I’m starting to see a little definition but nothing dramatic…yet. Yesterday, Marvin gave the 4Runner an oil change and replaced the thermostat. Casey really doesn’t want to test it again to make sure there is nothing else wrong with it but I think maybe we should so we’re not on the way somewhere and we get stuck again (refer to October posts). We went to Best Buy and picked up the new releases for the week: Jackass, Maid in Manhattan, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. We got Bulletproof in the mail yesterday as well. Yesterday was a good mail day. Our DVD collection is up to 328. We’ve tapered off some due to paying off our credit cards. Look at us go paying off that debt. Last night was the second to last week of the Real World. 🙁 I’m sad. I don’t know if they’ve announced when the Paris season will begin. It probably won’t be as good as Las Vegas because they normally alternate good seasons with bad. Look for Blake soon on the Real World. Casey and I will be the friends that come visit him in his new city and cause drama. 🙂

Nothing much happening other than all that.

New Movies…

We got Private Parts in the mail today, and we are watching it now. Kelly is importing pictures into iPhoto on her Powerbook from the other computer. I decided that SPAM was becoming a serious problem for me so I decided to move from Outlook Express 6 to Mozilla Mail 1.3. Mozilla Mail implements a Bayesian mail filter to learn what SPAM is and filter it out whenever you get it. I just finished importing all my mail from Outlook Express and have managed to trim down my Inbox from about 220 messages to about 4. Plus when I finally make the move to Mandrake 9.1 on my laptop I will be able to export everything to Evolution or keep Mozilla Mail.

I was sitting in the bathroom today and trying to figure out if I load Mandrake on my print server how do I share a printer out to a Windoze machine? Is it done thru Samba? Hmmmmmm. I finally managed to get our Epson Stylus Photo 820 shared out to the Powerbook. I had to install Gimp-print to find the right drivers to be able to print from a Samba share. And yesterday I was playing with Powerbook trying to test the battery in it to see if we are getting decent life out of it. I have been reading about a lot of Powerbook/iBook owners who have degraded performance with the release of 10.2.4, so we ran the battery down yesterday, and charged it all the way back up. I found a perl script to run that gave the current parameters of the battery including the capacity, amps, current charge. Here it is…..

#!/bin/bash

[ -x /usr/sbin/ioreg ] &&
/usr/sbin/ioreg -p IODeviceTree -n “”battery”” -w 0|
sed -ne ‘/| *{/,/| *}/ {
s/^[ |]*//g
/^[{}]/!p
}’ |
awk ‘/Battery/ {
gsub(“[{}()”]”,””, $3)
gsub(“,”,” “,$3)
split($3,ct,” “)
# extract flag value and convert to hex
sub(“Flags=”,””,ct[2])
str=sprintf(“Flags=%d/0x%03x”,ct[2],ct[2])
sub(“Flags=[0-9]*”,str,$3)
# get max and current charge levels
sub(“.*=”,””,ct[4])
sub(“.*=”,””,ct[5])
printf(“%s [%.1f%%]
“,tolower($3),100*ct[5]/ct[4])
}’

# EOF

At first I thought that we were having battery trouble because we only had about a hour and 15 minutes beforewe were on stand-by battery.Then I changed the Energy Saver settings and turned down the screen brightnessso now we are an hour and 15 minutes into the run down with 61% of battery left, so at the current settings itwould seem that we have at least 3 hours or battery life.

Everybody to the Limit. For all you Strong Bad fans out there.

We were pretty lazy today, we didn’t get out of bed until almost 12 today.The alarm went off at 8, but neitherone of us could drag our lazy asses out of bed.So we ended up going to the gym at about 2:30 or so, then afterthat we had to go to Wal-Mart to pick up some quarts of oil for the truck.Because we couldn’t find strawsat Wal-Mart we went over to Target to get some.We saw John over there but he didn’t want to stay and talk with ushe must have had other things to do. 🙂

We have to drop the truck off in the morning at Liberty Toyota to get the thermostat and the oil changed, sowe will actually have to get up in the morning.

Private Parts is over now, so we are going to watch Real World/ Road Rules Challenge followed by Moster Garage.

TEEEEEECH SUPPORT!

Its the only thing I’m good for anymore. I haven’t been to work in about 7 months, but I’m still going cheesy computer work. Last night Dave called upon my computer skills for one of his buddies. His friend just purchased a new 12in Powerbook with SuperDrive to replace his POS Windows 98 laptop, and he wanted to copy the files from the Windows 98 machine to the Windows XP image running in Virtual PC 6 on his Powerbook. He was having trouble getting the laptops to talk to each other across his impressive home network (fiber, Cat-6) so I tinkered with it for about an hour before I finally figured it out. I really should be charging folks for tek support, we could use the extra cash. We can’t really even afford to go see Dreamcatcher today because we are trying to save up as much money as we can in case we move to Las Vegas at the end of May.

I’m currently downloading the AniMatrix shorts right now. There is a new one being shown during the previews of Dreamcatcher. So far I have 2 of the 4 downloaded, I may not be able to get Final Flight of the Osiris today until they release it onto the matrix website.

I was so tempted to pick up another 10GB iPod today from the Dell website cause they had them for $299 plus tax. That was an unbelivable deal, but once again cause we are trying to save money…….

It is probably going to cost at least 2000 dollars to move to Las Vegas. From turning off all the utilites and stuff here to deposit and first months rent there its going to be a pain in the ass. But going back to skool is going to be great. Plus I saw some positions at Mandalay Bay for a systems administrator working Active Directory and some other crap. Hopefully I can find some happy medium between work and skool.

So we got home from the gym yesterday and the dipshit that lives downstairs from us was parked across two spots like he always is. He has no respect for anyone else living here in this building. So I took a picture of him double parked between both our cars, so next time he does it I’m goig to print out a little flyer with a picture of him double parked and tape them all over his car with the words “Learn to Park” all over the pic.

As you can see I pulled my car as close as I thought was safe, yet I was still able to fit into the parking space.GRRRRRRRR I hate people.

A much needed break.

Just sitting here watching Top Gun, taking a much needed break from CNN. CNN is all that we’ve been watching for the last 3 days and most of it is repeating information. Not a lot has happened today. Because of the snow we decided to sleep in and hold off on going to the gym until this afternoon. We lead an exciting life!

WAR?

2003-03-19 20:11:44 It looks like war is about to begin. Its about time. The President is about to address the nation here in a couple of minutes, hopefully we drop a MOAB into downtown Baghdad it will be all over then.

We didn’t go to the gym today. We didn’t want to get out on the streets or get stuck in a snow drift. I heard that some town in Colorado got 87 inches of snow from this storm. 87 INCHES. Can you believe that. Hopefully that will help us out of the this damn drought that we are in.

Well I somewhat let the cat out of the bag about Kelly and I possibly moving to Las Vegas. Some may already know it, others may have just found out. I’m finally going to take advantage of my MGIB and finish my skooling. I will receive almost $1K a month for 36 months. And UNLV is only 7 dollars more a credit hour then PPCC, for University level education. So Kelly and I may go out there in a few weeks and look for an apartment close to the skool, maybe in Henderson. I called my aunt Donna who lives in Vegas, and asked her to send us some Apartments for Rent magazines so we can get a better idea of what is available. I think Kelly also has compiled a list of apartments in the area with the amenities that we want. I won’t be able to start skool until the spring semester at UNLV because I will be traveling thru November, but that will give me time to find some kind of job in the area that will help in paying the bills. But it won’t have to be much of a job, my MGIB will easily cover tuition, and still have some left over for rent and other bills. Its a good thing we are down to only 3 credit cards and 2 of them are cards I use to travel on, so our debit isn’t a lot, and that will make it much easier to live on.

I wonder if they are going to step up security on base tomorrow, it will make it a pain in the ass to get on base tomorrow to go to the gym. Some days we have to wait quite awhile to get up to the gate to get on the base.

We were watching Sum of All Fears, a fitting movie for the day. But we turned it off for now to catch the President. But it doesn’t look like we are launching a full scale invasion at this time so maybe we will go back to the movie.

I don’t know anything else except that we have managed to get 3100 hits since we started our website. WE RULE!

Let it snow!!!

Wow I’m hoping that this weather front turns into the Blizzard of ’03. This is great, we got back from the gym, and I swept the car off, then we came upstairs and took showers and then headed off to Liberty Toyota to get the truck fixed. There was another inch of snow on the car when we got down there, so we were getting about an inch and hour. Its kinda slacked off right now, but they are predicting about 10 inches in the next 24 hours or so.

I watched a bitchin episode of Monster Garage last night. They turned a Mustang into the world’s fastest lawnmower. Then there was a show called Super Massive Black Holes on the Discovery Channel last night, I haven’t watched it yet but I’m going to. We are watching last nights Howard Stern right now.

We picked up 8 Mile this morning on the way home from the gym. Everyone that was in the line at Best Buy in front and behind us had a copy of 8 Mile in their hands. Everyone is sitting at home today because of the snow, and watching movies. All but 3 skools in Colorado are out today.

Kelly is still looking at apartments around Las Vegas, I think she has narrowed the list down quite a bit. I think she had 40 on the list, and she is down to less then 20 now. We are looking at places that accept pets so we can get a little dog, and a place that has a fitness center so we don’t have to pay for a gym membership for both of us.

Yawn!

Not much else going on today.
