Happy Birthday Casey!

Casey turned the big 3-0 today! Unfortunately it wasn’t the birthday I envisioned him having but it wasn’t too bad considering. And Brady was one week old! We went to the hospital earlier today and visited Brady. Sadly, we didn’t get to hold her because she was in a deep sleep and we didn’t want to interrupt her. Casey and I went back this evening and stayed for about 2 hours and did get to hold her. And she awake most of the time! After losing some weight yesterday because they took the IV out and she lost weight from the extra fluids and arm board, her weight tonight was 3.7 pounds. They switched Brady to the feeding pump yesterday and have her eating 30ml (1oz) slowly over 2 hours. She’s still spitting up a little bit because she isn’t able to just stop eating when she’s done since it goes directly into her stomach. So now with her feeding pump being released over 2 hours she really only has an hour rest between her feedings since those are every 3 hours.

More news

We’re another day closer to bringing Brady home today. While she’s not off of her IV yet, the nurses are hoping that by midnight she’ll be completely weaned off of her fluids. She’s doing good with the extra milk she’s being given. At her 2:00 feeding she was up to 21ml and her last feeding should be up to 23ml. She didn’t keep the 21ml down completely and ended up spitting up on Casey but I blame this on the nurse. I had been feeding her and she said it should take 10 minutes for her to eat the entire contents (I was holding the syringe while it was going down the tube in her mouth) and when the nurse came back in to check there was 3ml left (which could have been my fault because you have to hold it at a certain height to get things to go down at the right speed). Well the nurse saw there was some left and got out the plunger thing and shotgunned the rest into her belly. No wonder she spit up while poor Casey was holding her. We also found out that she gained an ounce and a half in the last day so she’s within 15 grams (it’s apparently common in hospitals to use grams for weight because it’s easier when doling out prescriptions) of her birth weight. Brady’s really advanced because we heard most preemie’s don’t get back to their birth weights until 2 weeks after they’re born. She’s still in the incubator for now but hopefully won’t be on it for too much longer. She’s able to regulate her body temperature for the most part but when she’s not in the incubator her extremities will cool down faster than it should. I guess the other criteria for being in an open crib is that her weight has to be 3lbs 12oz so we’re not quite there yet. I’m so proud of how well Brady is doing and pray she’ll keep astounding everyone she comes in contact with.

T.G.I.F

Not that Friday’s really mean anything when you are on vacation, but its another day closer to bringing Brady home.  Kelly, Mom and I just got back from our favorite Mexican joint and are now sitting around watching a movie, taking it easy.

We got to spend a lot of time with Brady today, everyone got to hold her at least once.  She may get her IV out tomorrow and was taken off the phototherapy today as well.  Here are a pair of vids that I took today.

This one is the first time my Mom has gotten to hold her:

Here is a cute one.  Kelly and I were sitting there watching her and laughing and woke her up:

Tomorrow Kelly, Deb and my Mom are going shopping for preme clothes, I picked up Midnight Club: Los Angeles today so I will probably be playing that for a good bit after we visit with Brady in the am.

Merry Christmas

Hope everyone is having a safe and merry Christmas.  We just wrapped up a big family dinner, about 12 people in total.  Ham, Prime Rib and all the fixins.

We spent a few hours with Brady today.  Kelly got to hold her for quite awhile today, and I changed my very first dirty diaper.

I may venture out tomorrow and see if I can hunt down a deal on a Digital SLR, and maybe a new Xbox game.  We will see how things go.

Edit:

After dinner Kelly and I went back to the hospital to spend some more time with Brady, so I added a few pics to the image rotator.  Also Doodie and Stoli were on their best behavior at Kelly’s folks house with all of the people around.  Also here is a quick video of Kelly holding Brady this evening.

Day 3

As you can see from the video that Casey posted below, Brady was taken off of her CPAP machine today! And like he said this was the first time holding her since she was born. He was waiting patiently until after he could get his flu shot before holding her just because of all of the warnings in the NICU and the fear that she would regress. I’m so happy that Brady didn’t have the CPAP on *and* they took off her shades (she’s under a light for jaundice right now and wears protective eye covering) so he could actually see her face while holding with her – well when she wasn’t trying to cover it up with her hands. Hopefully at some point more than one of us can hold her in a visit but for now we’ll be trading back and forth so she doesn’t get overly stimulated. They also started giving her breast milk today. I only wish I could speed up production on my end and get ahead of her. I think she’s eating (through a tube in her mouth which will soon be moved to her nose) as fast as I can pump it. Brady’s really doing well which is such a relief because it’s making the separation a little more bearable although it’s still really hard knowing that she’s in the NICU and not home with us. We’re praying everyday that she develops rapidly and can be sent home even before 37 weeks (gestational age).

Nearly Christmas

Kelly and I just walked in the door of the house a bit ago.  We are going to go get showers, pick up my Mom from the airport then head back to the hospital to spend some time with Brady.   It feels good to be home, but not great since we can’t bring Brady home with us yet.

Here is a quick clip I was able to grab of her on the day she was born, I was unable to upload them to YouTube because of the hospital internet filter.  So here it is.

Hopefully later today I can go get Stoli and Doodie and bring them home as well.  I have a lot of laundry and house cleaning to do since for the last week I have been and out of the house like a whirlwind.  Hopefully that won’t take long.  I went and picked up a Honeybaked Ham for Christmas dinner while Kelly was taking a break, and they really stuck it to me.  I guess you have to reserve a mortal size ham, if you just walk in and get a ham you get a ham the size of a Buick… oh well.  I like leftovers.

Back in Business

Here are some new pictures to accompany our new version of WordPress.  Two pictures of Brady and one shot of Dude taken this morning while Deb was getting ready for work this morning.  Hopefully this new Gallery plugin functions similar to the old.

Kelly is probably going to be discharged from the hospital tomorrow, but sadly Brady is likely to have to stay here for about another six weeks.  She wasn’t on oxygen for the first six hours of her life but later yesterday was moved to a nasal cannula and is now on a CPAP but as of tonight we found out as long as she tolerates it will be going back to just the nasal cannula tomorrow.  Apparently it’s extremely common for babies born at high altitude to be on some type of oxygen after birth, even at full term.  We’re also told to expect ups and downs so while she might not be on oxygen one day, she might be the following.  All babies also drop weight after birth and she’s gone from 3lb6oz to 3lb2oz, however, the nursing staff has been given the ok to start giving her breastmilk as she tolerates it.  She’ll most likely get the first round tonight or some time in the morning and will be very little at first but will increase gradually.  Two days down…

Upgrading WordPress

Going to try and upgrade WordPress to version 2.7 so bare with me here in case I break something.

It’s Getting Late

Its just a little past 10pm here and Kelly and I are still up after our long day.  I have been mucking with the blog trying to get it brought up to speed.  Our web host is migrating away from MySQL4 to MySQL5 and I had to convert our database and update the blog config files to point to the new DB.  I was getting some strange character encode issues earlier that I think I have resolved at this point.

Next up I need to the core WordPress installation files to version 2.7 which according to the promo materials will be the last manual install that I will ever have to do, which is fine by me, as I always end up deleting something useful.

I’m doing most of this because there is a heavy filter on the web access here at the hospital.  Can’t get to YouTube, Skype, Hulu etc.  So I’m working on things that I shouldn’t be working on while I’m half crazy from exhaustion.  Anyways.

I emailed myself this link from my iPhone earlier while I was sitting in the drive through at Burger King waiting for dinner.  Hopefully my new SmartYouTube plugin works properly… of course I have no way of telling while on hospital WiFi.  So here goes nothing.

Probably one of the best versions of While My Guitar Gently Weeps ever.  BTW for you unwashed heathens who are wondering who is on lead guitar that is Eric Clapton, to his left is Dhani Harrison, George Harrison’s only son.  There is another version I watched that was done by Tom Petty and Prince, but still doesn’t have the feeling.  While Prince is a great guitar player he doesn’t hold a candle to Clapton.

Tomorrow I will go home and find either the cable for our camera or my SD reader so I can upload some of the short videos I took of Brady earlier.
