Lazy

We’re sitting at home having another lazy weekend.  Yesterday’s the first time either of us has played a game on the Xbox since we left Austin.  We’ve been using the Xbox for a media center nightly but as far as games are concerned we just haven’t bothered.  Casey’s mission as of yesterday was to beat Assassin’s Creed this weekend.  The last time I looked at his achievements he had 61% unlocked so he’s well on his way as long as there aren’t any more controller-throwing induced sequences.  We played a little bit of Guitar Hero 3 last night and I’m pretty surprised it didn’t take us long at all to get back into things.  There’s some marathon on TiVo right now and both tuners have been going nonstop for hours now.  I’m not really sure what its recording but at least there’ll be plenty of content on the TiVo now.

I’ve heard that after nine hours negotiating on Friday, the writer’s strike may be ending this week.  Fingers crossed that actors don’t start!  Unfortunately I’m wondering how many new episodes will come out this season since hiatus usually starts in April but at this point I’ll be grateful for whatever I can get.

Still no job yet.  I had been offered and accepted a position as a tech writer/editor out at Schreiever Air Force Base as a government contractor.  But the Friday before the Monday I was supposed to start, something was held up with the paperwork in the interim investigation (they’re not 100% sure what but have some ideas none of which is of any significance to be performing the job).  The people at the company were very nice and tried to do everything they could to get around me needing an interim clearance because they were confident my full clearance would come back approved.  But the customer at Schreiever wasn’t able to wait the 3 months the investigation would have taken so things didn’t work out. I’m still pretty disappointed about the whole thing but I’m trying to be optimistic and listen to everyone else around me that’s saying that everything happens for a reason and it wasn’t the job for me.  Even after I had already been offered the tech writer job and was under the assumption everything was going as planned, I still went to an Excel/scenario test for a buyer position at one of the hospitals here.  This is the second assessment I’ve taken for this position.  The first one was a week after I had applied (the job req was only posted for a day) and I had to do an online skills assessment type thing that took about 45 minutes and based on that they would be continuing on with the selection process.  I have another interview scheduled for Tuesday morning.  So this is the third step in the interview process and the first time I’m meeting face to face with someone.  I’m really hoping this position works out because I’m so sick of the hunt and all of the interviewing.  I’m due!

Spam Spam Everywhere!

Thought I would just swing in and get caught up on my comment spam moderation.  If anyone wants to buy some Tramadol, Phentermine, or Viagra, I can probably point you in the right direction.  WordPress does much better about comment spam then the old PHPNuke site used to.  Can’t thank James enough for pointing me in that direction.

Had to run up to the data center today to get some hard drives replaced, so I took the time to map out all of our servers, quite a pain.  Hopefully once we get the complete documentation up to snuff we can stop going in for crap like that.  We pay for on-site support so we don’t have to go in, but sometimes its less of a hassle to just get in the car and drive across town ourselves.

Not much else going on right now, Kelly and I just watched Fargo and The Rock this evening, I was kinda in a “Lets watch a movie we haven’t seen in awhile” kinda mood.  The Rock is mastered very weird or just my Xbox360 didn’t like it, cause it was playing in a very small window, we had to put the movie in stretch mode to fill the screen… dunno… strange.

Oh in other news, HD-DVD release titles that are making the top 10 sellers… oh wait there aren’t any.

I guess its time to go out and get that PS3, I miss watching HD content (and I’m to cheap to buy HD cable).

Trying to keep a low profile.

I really don’t want to do anything today.  Not a damn thing.  Spent most of the day yesterday trying to get paperwork in order for the hardware failure we had yesterday on one of our low pop servers.  Writing documents makes me crazy.  Not to mention James and I need to write up a whole new net of docs for the new enthronement we built.  Ugh.

My team lead and I are both discussing our MCSE’s.  Him and I both have the same Windows 2000 tests complete and we need to get them upgraded prior to May or whatever before the tests expire.  I just need to go take the damn things.  Perhaps I will go take my Exchange 2003 certs, there are only 2 of them and I’m confident that I could just walk in and take them.

We finally finished the last episode of Heroes Season 2 last night (s02e11).  Pretty good series.  Hopefully the writers strike wraps up soon cause the lack of shows is making me angry, although Nip/Tuck is back to its usual crazy goodness.

It snowed AGAIN last night, we probably got only a quarter of an inch, but its enough to leave a fine dusting on everything.  I’m so sick of snow and cold, I’m ready for spring to get here so I can rebuild my deck.

Nearly forgot my new desktop has been getting BSOD due to memory failure.  I really need to run a MemTest on it for a few hours and see if the memory is really bad.  I bought it off the refurb list but it still has a 1 yr warranty so I can just call em up and have them send me more memory.

Lost

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ou7cWOTXJs]

Kelly and I just finished up watching Lost Season 3, getting ourselves all prepared for the season premiere tomorrow.  I can’t wait.  I have been looking forward to this bit of TV for nearly a year now.

Today has been an interesting day thus far.  This morning about an hour after I got up we had an array failure on one of our mailbox servers.  So write now I’m writing up an incident report to give to our customer.  I can’t say I’m real happy with the current state of affairs at hp right now.  Pay cuts, expense cuts, cuts cuts cuts.. those are a lot of the words going around right now, and its directly affecting the way we live.

My mom and grandmother came to visit us last weekend.  We hung out and went up to Cripple Creek one day, but mostly just took it easy, it was a bit of a vacation for all of us since I had a 4.5 day weekend (had to work some on Friday).  So that was nice and relaxing.  We did manage to get quite a few pictures hung around the house, and have some new ideas for furniture and such for our front room when funds are less of an issue.

On Monday Kelly and I went to the Apple Store hoping to catch a glimpse of the MacBook Air, but alas they didn’t have a floor model even though pre-ordered models are shipping today.  Shitty.  I was hoping to take a gander at it and decide if it would meet Kelly’s needs for a laptop so that I could steal her current MacBook Pro.  All things in good time though.

I think i finally decided what to do with my gift certificate that I got from HP.  I think I’m going to get a PS3.  There are a few titles that will be released soon, and I REALLY want to start watching movies in HD again.  Our HD-DVD player was short lived to say the least, but it really looks like Blu-Ray is going to win this deal.  So I might as well get the PS3, although my A/V Rack is getting a bit cramped.  And although GTA4 is going to be released for both consoles, Metal Gear Solid 4 is going to be PS3 exclusive.

Ok back to work I guess.

I hate Vista!

Ugh.  That is all I can say… ugh.

I just spent the last two days trying to get rid of Windows Vista.  I had been running Vista Enterprise on my work laptop, but it was frustrating to work with.  All the pop ups, the sluggishness, the constantly running fan etc.  I’m also running Vista Ultimate on my desktop, but I’m considering removing that as well.  If the 4-5GB of install space and the mgp or wmv moving backgrounds that chew up tons of RAM don’t do it for ya…

I also had a hell of a time getting XP back on my laptop.  The nw8440 laptop boots from a SATA disk that XP doesn’t recognize on Textmode install.  And for those that know Windows OS installs, you will also know that it takes a floppy drive to install SCSI/SATA drivers.  Well I don’t own a floppy drive, so the ordeal I had to go through to get XP back up and running.

First of all I had to build a custom windows XP installation CD that included a textmode driver for my SATA disk.  I managed to get the OS on but then I couldn’t get my Audio drivers to work.  So after about a dozen bad CD burns I finally managed to build another custom XP install that not only had my SATA drivers, but all the drivers for my laptop and much of the Windows XP patches and updates currently released.

Ugh.

I’m on call this week and put in WAY to many hours on Saturday and Sunday.  The good thing is I get to take Friday off this week as well as Monday and Tuesday of next week.  A nice 5 days off.

Here is a pic that was sent to me today of our nieces.

Yes to everything

This is from Radar’s website and gives some insight into the craziness that is Scientology.

“The internal church document was developed by Scientology founder and onetime science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard for use during “auditing” sessions—you know, the ones designed to identify your trapped “thetans.”The “thetans,” or alien ghosts, were implanted in Earth’s volcanoes 75 million years ago by the evil intergalactic ruler Xenu, until the nasty buggers escaped and invaded the bodies of each and every one of us. New recruits, or “preclears,” answer the questions while hooked up to an E-meter—a crude, polygraph-like contraption—as a Church-sanctioned auditor records the subject’s responses for further expensive inquiry. Radar excerpted the best of the list’s 343 questions. Here’s a verbatim sampling.”

That time of year again.

I have been slacking on posting as of late. Been working and sitting.

I have pretty much taken all the good stuff from my desk at the office and brought it home. I’m avoiding the office as much as humanly possible now. Our new boss may be buying everyone on the team a new 24in LCD monitor in the near future, so I’m going to need to do something with my desk to make it all fit. Its going to be super-geeky in my office once I get everything in place.

Kelly and I have been getting caught up on Heroes I think we have one more episode left, s02ep11. Which I have been told has a huge cliffhanger, so I’m pretty excited to finish it. I fell asleep last night right after we kicked it off. I’m turning into an old man, falling asleep at a quarter after 9. Only two weeks from the Lost season premiere, I’m very excited for that. Maybe we can watch some of last season before it airs.

I go on call tomorrow, which is shitty cause we are also starting our compressed working schedule on Monday… which just so happens to be my scheduled day off, as well as Martin Luther King day…huzzah. So I’m working on my day off, which also happens to be a holiday and will be the only one working ALL day. So basically my pager will be going off ALL day. Ugh. Although I have managed to get Friday off so I can spend it with my mom and grandma as they are flying in to visit. Not really certain what we are going to do for the weekend, but we will think of something.

We sold off our HD-DVD drive for the Xbox and nearly all of our HD-DVDs that we had. The format war is coming to a close and I wanted to cut our losses while we could. Its a shame though cause Transformers looked amazing in 1080p. But our regular Xbox makes an excellent upconverting DVD player, so we will stick with that for a bit. On the other hand I received a $500 dollar award from work so I’m actually considering buying a PS3, that way if somehow HD-DVD makes a huge comeback I can still play games on it. Also the PS3 is only one of a few Blu-Ray players on the market right now that will meet the Profile 2.0 spec. Although I don’t usually watch most of the bonus material that comes with a DVD, so spec changes wouldn’t bother me that much. Also Universal recently released Stargate SG1 on Blu-Ray which kind of ends their HD-DVD exclusive deal. Although they deny ditching the format.

Our Verizon contract is gradually drawing to a close, and it couldn’t be more timely that AT&T has finally decided to sell the iPhone to business customers. This means I can use my HP discount and get us a pair of iPhones with service for cheap, although there may not be hardware discounts. Now if only they release the 3G iPhone before May.

One Week Later

We left Austin a week ago today but with all that’s happened it feels so much longer ago. We ended up getting snow early on Sunday morning and while it had started clearing up by mid-day, another front was directly behind it. My Uncle John was itching to fly his powered paraglider (PPG) before he went back to the oil field on Tuesday and because of the shifty conditions ended up crashing. It came as such a shock to the family because we had all had lunch together with him at Texas Land & Cattle only a few hours earlier. He fell approximately 250 feet (although the news is reporting 500 but I guess that makes for a better story) before he hit a telephone pole. My dad was filming him fly and ended up catching the entire thing on video from right before until he hit the ground. John was able to talk and walk around before asking to go to the hospital.  John was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital’s trauma unit where we all sat with him until he was given a room on the trauma floor five hours later. I guess the 911 call was picked up on the news scanners because all three news stations (CBS (KKTV), ABC (KRDO), NBC (KOAA) came out to the scene to investigate (John was already in the ambulance and no longer at the scene at this point). My dad was still at the scene during all of this (and is even shown in the news footage hoisting John’s equipment over a barbed wire fence) because he had to wait for the sheriff’s office to release John’s equipment after taking pictures. The sheriff’s office had never seen a mean “fall from the sky” and was concerned that the FAA might need to get involved. My dad informed them that PPG is not regulated by the FAA as dictated by a certain code and after over an hour he was allowed to leave. John fractured his L2 vertebrae (lower back) and has some compression fractures; mentally, he’s as well off as he ever was. It’s a miracle that he survived the crash and we’re all so grateful that he wasn’t hurt worse than he is. He was released from the hospital today and will be recovering for the next 2 months at my parent’s house. Even with all that’s happened he’s eager to get back to flying again. John is in contact with Fox News seeing if they’d like to air the footage before he posts it on You Tube. So I’m going to wait until after that time to post the entire clip. Until then, if you’re interested John shared the footage that my dad took with KKTV and they did an interview while he was in the hospital.

Last Thursday, I had my second interview with Fox. They had called when we were in Texas and I ended up getting it pushed back a day so I could attend. I thought the interview went really well. I was in there for an hour and 15 minutes and met with three different people. I was told that the position I had originally applied and interviewed for was now being given to the station manager’s daughter who wanted the position (nepotism at its best) so I was now being considered for the National Sales Assistant. I was supposed to hear something back on Friday but still haven’t. I know people are still dragging their feet returning back to the grind after the short weeks during holiday season but still. Friday afternoon I had a phone interview with the Sports Authority in Englewood (Denver). I decided to pass on the face-to-face interview because after mapping the location, it was 67 miles away – minimum 3 hour daily commute – and not worth it. Monday, I had a second interview at ITT for the Buyer II position again. I was only there for about 15 minutes while on a conference call with a manager that was headquartered in Virginia but I’m pretty confident I did well and projected myself in a way that I can’t over analyze. They said they would be making a decision by the end of the week and I should hear something then. I applied for a position with the YMCA as well and the req closed for that on Monday. I was asked to complete an application and send it back which I did this morning but haven’t heard yet. I really am surprised with the economy the way it is that so many companies are hiring right now. Not that I’m complaining.

Casey and I had a ton of fun during our week in Austin. The drive ended up being longer than we had anticipated. We thought it’d only be about 12 hours and it was between 15.5 and 16 each way. We took the southern route through Raton Pass but still hit an approaching snow storm in Colorado and freezing temps for most of the trip. While Stoli’s had plenty of experience with long car rides, this was Dude’s first trip and we’re relieved that he took to it so well. We finally arrived at Justin & Robin’s at about 10 pm local time.

Brooklyn and Emmett are so cute! And so much smaller than our kids. Our worries about Stoli were realized when we got there but she got better throughout the trip. We were even able to let them all out together for short periods. But because of their different sizes, tendencies, and personalities, for the most part they stayed segregated much to my disappointment.

Friday we had a late start leaving the house because Casey had to work some. Justin and Robin were sick that day so we got to spend the whole day together. Robin went out for an errand and surprised us all with breakfast tacos from Taco Cabana to hold us over till what ended up being dinner. We all drove to James & Lana’s new house near Lake Travis. For dinner we all went to a local chain, Chuy’s, for some of the best Tex-Mex we’ve had in a loonng time. When we got back we ended up just drinking and playing some Guitar Hero 3 (we brought our Xbox) before heading to bed.

Saturday was Casey’s (29th) birthday! Robin said it was his golden birthday since he was 29 on the 29th. Justin and Robin took us for a trip to sight see outside of Austin for a few hours. We walked around the river at New Braunfels and Gruene before getting ready for Casey’s birthday dinner. We went to the Salt Lick which is a BBQ restaurant out in the boonies. I seriously think has to be the highlight of the county because the sheriff’s office was directly traffic for parking. Its a good thing we went with locals because we would have been surprised the place was BYOB, luckily we knew this and had a cooler ready! James, Lana, Daphne (Robin’s sister), Joey (Daphne’s boyfriend), and Shane (Robin’s friend) came to help us celebrate! After a filling all-you-can-eat dinner we all went back to Justin and Robin’s for some more Guitar Hero 3. Stoli ended up trying to bite Joey so she stayed in the kitchen for the rest of the night.

For Sunday brunch, Justin and Robin took us to Moonshine. Its a cute little restaurant in downtown Austin that serves traditional breakfast foods with a twist. For example, there were green eggs (pesto flavored) and grits with green chiles. Everything was so good its making me hungry even now! We were pretty worried about how Stoli was going to do that afternoon because Robin’s other sisters Ginger, Candace, and Candace’s husband, Eric, were coming out to spend New Year’s with all of us, so we spent a few hours outside in the 70 degree sunshine beforehand. We introduced everyone one at a time and everything went great, Stoli was loving all of the attention from everyone. Justin’s cousin, Aaron, even stopped by for several hours and she was still a good girl. We were scratching our heads trying to figure out what set her off about Joey since he’s a dog person and the only thing we can think of is he had a beard. As usual Dude was his social little self.

Justin and Robin had to work on New Year’s Eve, so since Casey and James had to work part of the day anyway we went over to James and Lana’s with the dogs to hang out for a bit. They ended up being told to stop working around 1 so after that they took us to Pluckers for wings and beers. Casey and James ate so many wings if they had asked, they could have gotten onto the wall of fame (25 wings of piece – Buffalo Wing Factory needs that!). Then we went back to their house and played some Rock Band for the first time with our lead singer the Luscious Lana before heading back to Justin and Robin’s. For the rest of the night we just hung out taking turns playing Rock Band and drinking. We were all shocked that midnight came so fast and found ourselves scrambling for champagne to toast! James and Lana brought a ton of fireworks that we set off in the backyard (they’re legal in Austin) and had our own private show to bring the New Year in right! We stayed up till 3:30…

The next day most of us were a little, ahem, dehydrated from our celebrations and spent the day lounging around. We watched a lot of the History Channel that day. By the time Robin, Candace, and Ginger had finished preparing a tasty brunch for all of us we knew all about eggs, cereal, and orange juice. Eric, Candace, and Ginger had to head back to Houston early in the day so after saying our goodbye’s resumed sitting for the rest of the night.

Even after lounging all day we were not prepared for our drive home. On the way back, we took the northern route straight up 35 through Dallas, Oklahoma City, and Witchita until we got on 70 in Salina. The rest of the trip we could have driven in our sleep because we’ve made it so many times on the way out to Kansas City. We’re not so eager to be jumping back in the car anytime soon now as you can all well imagine.

Format war nearly over?

Well there is some speculation that Paramount studios is going to try and bail on HD-DVD in the very near future, if that happens that will leave only one remaining HD-DVD studio, and I’m sure that will end very quickly as well.

It looks like we were a little premature in jumping on the HD-DVD bandwagon and buying the Xbox addon drive and the few movies that we have.  Hopefully in the next few months you can find a Blu-Ray player for $100, that is the price point that will ensure more rapid adoption.  Although I still find that HD moves are overpriced, but it will take years for SD DVDs and HD DVDs (not HD-DVD) to be competitive,  considering that the majority of family’s still don’t have an HD capable television.

One more day.

Sigh… Its nearly Sunday already.

Today was a great day, Jim just happened to have an extra EVGA Geforce 7900GT that he gave/loaned me, since he wasn’t using it.  I can now play Team Fortress 2 at solid frame rates and a good resolution.

I may sneak into work on Monday and steal my monitor from my desk, and also swing by the Excess Room and see if I can swipe a small laptop hard drive for free.  I don’t need anything large only 10-20GB, just enough to load XP on this laptop, cause running Linux from my thumb drive is driving me crazy.

I will tell you why Linux isn’t more pervasive on the desktop… IT SUCKS!  I was unable to get Flash to work consistently.  I have to drape a patch cable across the living room floor to be able to access the Internet, since I’m unable to get my wireless card to load properly on a three year old laptop.  I read an article the other day that blamed Apple and Mac OS X on killing the chances of Linux on the desktop.  Apple did it right, they wrapped *NIX into an easy to use graphical system that is just easy to use, Linux is all about tinkering, and that is all you will do is tinker.  I want something that “Just Works” and that includes Windows most of the time.

I’m getting excited for the upcoming MacWorld.  So many rumors going around, tablet, ultra-portable, black MacBook Pro etc.

I should get a night job to feed my gadget addiction.  I really shouldn’t get a new laptop though.  I think i will get a new work laptop in October of this year (hopefully with Blu-Ray) and as long as I can get this laptop in good working order I will be in good shape.

Kelly and I picked up a few HD-DVDs the other day that I forgot to mention, probably a waste of cash following the announcement by Warner and New Line that they were going exclusively Blu-Ray.  If Microsoft had been a team player and had integrated an HD-DVD drive into the Xbox360 instead of the external add-on drive, things would be way different.

But anyway we picked up the following HD-DVDs from Best Buy on a Buy 3 Get 2 Free deal:

  1. Superman Returns
  2. Batman Begins
  3. Top Gun
  4. Bourne Ultimatum
  5. Transformers

I was actually surprised at how well Top Gun actually looked in 1080p considering how old the film really is but it looked great.  Batman Returns was more difficult to see a large difference over the SD version of the movie.  Jim and I watched clips from Transformers today and that looks really good as well.  But alas purchasing any more HD-DVDs is probably a bad idea at this point.
