Brady and Stoli

Stoli is currently obsessed with Brady’s pacifier. If Brady drops of Stoli rushes to grab it. So this morning while Kelly was sleeping Brady, Stoli and I were hanging out on the couch.

Not quite double

At 7 weeks old (38 weeks gestational age), Brady weighed a whopping 6 pounds 5 ounces at her weight check appointment today! This is almost double her birth weight (3 pounds 6 ounces). The pediatrician wanted to see her gain 1/2-1 ounce a day and Brady’s been doing just that. I’m still only able to nurse three times a day for now since we need to make sure she keeps gaining weight. So for now and probably till she’s 6 months old, for all of her other feedings she’ll have pumped milk with human milk fortifier added to help provide her with extra calories when she takes bottles. The reason the number of breastfeeding sessions is limited is it burns more calories to nurse versus bottle feed and she doesn’t get the fortifier added (obviously) to those feedings. The pediatrician was so pleased with her gain that we’re not scheduled to go back and have it checked for three weeks at which time we’ll have Brady’s two month appointment.

Brady’s 2 month appointment = immunizations. Since she’s a preemie we wanted to delay her immunizations just a little bit. So obviously for her “two month” appointment Brady will be older than 2 months (she’ll be 10 weeks) but the pediatrician wanted to make sure she wasn’t too far off schedule based on her actual age.

We’re having a pretty hard time keeping her neck clean and dry. Brady’s a bit of a messy eater at times (if she’s tired of the bottle isn’t what she wants). She has some irritation in one of her neck rolls so the doctor called in a prescription to keep things dry and hopefully prevent it from turning into a full blown yeast infection. So until her neck lengthens out a bit more this might be a recurring theme with her.

Today was a busy day. This morning before the pediatrician appointment, Brady had an ophthalmology appointment. Her exam in the NICU showed that she had stage 1 of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) and we were following up on that. The good news was that her right eye which showed stage 1/2 of ROP in the NICU now is only stage 1. The bad news is that her left eye which wasn’t showing ROP is now showing stage 1. The opthamologist also thought he could detect nearsightedness in her (how I have no clue) which isn’t an issue now but could create a need for glasses as she gets older (as in old enough to crawl??). She has another appointment in two weeks to follow up and see how her eyes are doing. I’m praying that it resolves itself naturally and soon because this is a whole other stressor.

Working on it

Brady’s been working on finding her cry since last night. Since she was born she’s never cried very much. Even in the hospital she was pretty laid back for most procedures. When she did cry, for things like getting a suppository and having her eyes held still with metal tools, it broke my heart. It’s kind of a relief because now we’ll know when she needs something but hopefully she stays a happy, easygoing baby even with her new found voice.

Hungry robbers steal chicken, cash

BRIAN NEWSOME

THE GAZETTE

A group of robbers with a hankering for fried chicken and a penchant for crime knocked off a Popeye’s Famous Fried Chicken Thursday night, according to police.

Three to five men wearing ski masks and black scarves raided the fast-food chicken joint at 3450 Austin Bluffs Parkway shortly before 10 p.m., according to a police report. At least one carried a handgun and another had a knife.

The men took off with chicken and cash. A search involving police dogs failed to find the men.

6 weeks yesterday

Brady had her 6 week birthday on Monday and as of her weight check yesterday was 5 pounds 13.5 ounces.  While I’m paranoid/terrified about everything right now including her not eating quite as much as they were having her eat in the NICU (2 ounces) she’s somehow gaining and that’s all that matters.  The pediatrician reassured us that she will eat when she’s hungry and that we our schedule doesn’t have to be quite as strict as it was in the NICU.

Right now we’re trying to establish some sort of routine and anything else we manage to get done (including posting) is just a bonus.  Please be patient with us and the lack of posts as we adjust to life as parents outside of the NICU where we were only parenting 8 hours a day, now it’s a full-time job.  We’re still getting to know Brady and she’s still getting to know us.  The dogs have done surprisingly well.  For the first couple of hours that we were home from the hospital we had hte gate up and they were so anxious to see what was going on.  The dogs haven’t fought each other or shown any signs of aggression towards her at all.  In fact, they want to kiss any exposed flesh they can find.  It’s pretty cute that they love her and are so interested in what she’s doing and hopefully as she gets bigger she’ll learn to like all of those sloppy kisses.  It’s been interesting taking care of her because she doesn’t cry and has only fussed so far when we’ve had cold hands or have taken to long getting her dressed.  That she does cry for some things is comforting because she will tell us is something is seriously bothering her but right now she just isn’t sweating the small stuff.  It sounds like a parent’s dream and it sort of is but it’d be nice to know when she’s hungry other than her just grunting and flicking her tongue in and out of her mouth.  Almost a week and she’s still alive and thriving so we must be doing something right.

Kinda Tired on Superbowl Sunday

I have heard people say you will never sleep again once you have children, and those people aren’t 100% inaccurate. You get sleep in bursts, and you are usually not in a very deep sleep because you are waiting to hear something. I’m not nearly as attuned to hearing Brady yet as Kelly but I’m getting there. Although I think Kelly and I are working something out. I’m taking the early morning hours, and letting her sleep. Bringing Brady downstairs with her bed and getting her out of earshot of Kelly is helping her get some rest. Than I can take a nap later in the day when Kelly gets up and around. Its more important that Kelly is well reseted as I’m not quite equipped for all of the feedings that Brady requires.

I’m very happy that we are at home now, and we have an excuse not to leave the house. So I’m content with that for awhile. My ass has missed my couch a great deal and now the two are rejoined.

James stole pager away from me for a few days this weekend so I can get somewhat adjusted to the new living arrangement and while I was hesitant at first to let him, it was very much appreciated now. I’m tired and can only imagine what it would have been like had I been getting paged.

Brady got her first bath at home yesterday and it didn’t quite have the desired affect that we were hoping. We bathed her then fed her and she was still wide awake for another hour after. Bah. But we did get cute pictures that I’m sure Kelly will put up later.

Ok off to drink coffee and stay awake for a bit.

40 Days Later

Well we are all at home now, 40 days later. Remind me to never go to the hospital again. I think I have spent enough time there to last me a lifetime.

Doodie and Stoli are in the kitchen right now behind the gate, and they are anxious to see Brady. Hopefully all goes well.
