Kelly booked tickets to KC last night. It looks like we will be leaving Thursday evening right after work, and getting into KC at about 1130pm or so. Its a little late but my Dad is taking that week off, and my Mom is off as well, so its no big deal. So I plan on just sitting outside and enjoying the piece and quiet. Oh and programming my parents TV.
Kelly and I are trying to decide what to do this weekend. Is anyone even allowed to buy fireworks in CA. I miss the days of wondering if you would still have all of your fingers come July 5th. Sigh.
So yesterday morning I was on the phone with my Mom and she was telling me about the cheap fares on America West (not my favorite airline but its cheap fare). So later that evening Kelly looked again at the same flight as the fare had gone up by 50 dollars. So later yesterday evening as I was laying in bed I began thinking about the logic behind airlines and the way that they price their tickets. As you get closer to departure time the cost raises significantly. I have seen last minute flights from Dulles to Colorado Springs cost as much as 1700 dollars (of course I wasn’t paying for it, but I still got the reciept). Is it simple supply and demand that causes the rise in prices or is there some other hidden cost that causes the increase. Do airlines think that because you are looking at a fare a day or two before the departure that you are desperate and willing to pay? It would seem to me that airlines would want to get MORE customers, thus reducing prices would be more bodies into the airports and on to the flights. I know I would rather pay 100 bones or something to fly to Vegas on the weekend instead of spending 5 hours in the car stuck in traffic in the middle of the desert, but if I wait last minute to buy the ticket it will cost me 500 dollars or more. WHY? If anyone cares to explain it to me feel free. I’ll be here all week.
