Updates on the sickly and cable woes

Brady’s still sick.  But we can’t really tell at this point if it’s a cold or allergies. Casey has come down with some congestion/runny nose but it hasn’t moved into his chest and he’s never had allergies before so we’re not sure there either.  I seem to have been spared so far, but I have had several sinus headaches this week which I am attributing to allergies but that’s nothing new for me.  As of this morning, at least one more of Brady’s teeth has started breaking the gum line.  Poor girl never gets a break from new teeth.

The lights are on the house, but now that they’re up we’ve decided we don’t like them.  We had originally bought warm white C6’s but ended up with just those on the tree (which Casey ended up falling out of – OUCH!) and cool white on the house (not C6’s but these small light balls).  We definitely don’t like having cool and warm lights at the same time and then the cool white just looks funny for some reason.  It gives off these purple glow and doesn’t look concentrated enough.  So today I went and bought icicle lights and when Casey removed the lights we don’t like he’ll be putting up the icicles at the same time.  Hopefully these work out because this is the last time he’s going to the roof (at least till he takes them down).

While we watched The Amazing Race finale yesterday (good job Megan & Cheyne – our 2nd choice overall to in after the Globetrotters didn’t make it), we put up the tree.  We managed to get all the branches fluffed out and it’s pre-lit so the white light portion is done, but we always add whatever colored lights match our theme so that’s yet to be added.  Hopefully Casey and I can get the added lights on before it’s time for him to go to bed and then I can do the rest solo tomorrow while he’s at work.  At this rate, it’s gonna take us a week to get up the tree.  And if that’s the case, it’ll be up till February again!

Our first Time Warner bill came in the mail today.  I became suspicious of them from the get go with their “Price Lock Guarantee” and all the freebies they were throwing at me for agreeing to it.  Well, I was right to be suspicious.  This month’s bill had $1.95 they were charging for their program guide (which I get for free with TiVo) and then another $7.99 rental charge for their DVR.  Now when I connected our service the CSR told me that DVR service was completely free but what she failed to mention is I had to pay for the equipment rental.  Uh, yeah no thanks.  We didn’t want/need a DVR in our bedroom to begin with and I only agreed since it was free.  So tomorrow I’ll be making the trek to their office to return their crappy DVR and pick up a TiVo tuning adapter.  Apparently something with Time Warner and TiVo is incompaitble and a tuning adapter is needed to receive all channels.  Not even just the HD channels, channels like Nick Jr. too.  I honestly don’t remember having this many issues with Comcast or my parents having to go through all this.  I have 60 days to cancel the Price Lock Guarantee too and at this rate, I just might in case something better comes along.  Although I really don’t see that happening or if it does, our TiVo becoming obsolete.  Ugh.  I did sign up for a free (hopefully it really is free) “turbo” boost to our internet service while I was on the phone tonight.  Casey can already tell a difference in our upload speeds so we’ll give it a whirl for a month and see if it’s worth it.

It’s not just TW…all cable companies are in the process of changing to SDV in a lot of their channels (usually just HD, but some regular ones too) which require that adapter for third party decoders like TiVo. I’m not sure if homebrew DVRs can get past this or not, I just know my TiVo, bless it, has to have one. Now with CableCard officially dying, who knows what’s gonna happen.
