Yawn!

Well we are up early today (well early for us) and we are getting ready to go to the gym. For some reason I just couldn’t get to sleep last night. We went to bed at around 11 or so, and I just laid there until almost 2 before I could go to sleep.

I was working on some extra code to throw into the website last night. I was working with redirecting by IP address with PHP, the only bad thing is I don’t know if I got my stat tracker to follow the redirect and log the hit. Nobody is available on IM to help me test it. I suppose it will have to wait until we get home from the gym.

Kevin and Rachel are gonna come over this evening and I’m going to cook some lasagna for dinnner. Mmmmmmm carbs. I really shouldn’t eat a whole lot of it, I have finally started losing some weight, I’m down to 215 again. It has been a couple of months since I saw this weight last, or whenever we were on the Atkins diet last. Hopefully it will keep going down. I want to get to around 190-200.

We got Natural Born Killers in the mail yesterday, as well as some Arthur Bryant’s BBQ sauce (Thanks Mom!). I’m excited about the sauce so I can make some tasty baby back ribs as soon as it warms up some.

Kelly’s folks are gonna come over here on Saturday to watch some Netflix movies on our TV for a change. We were watching Season 6 Disc 1 of the X-Files last week, and the disc ends in a two-parter, so we had to get the next disc to see the conclusion. I almost bought a Progressive Scan DVD player last week because Soundtrack (Ultimate Electronics) had the Panasonice S35 on-sale for 99 bones. I was thinking that it had the same DCDi chip by Faroudja that Mike has, and that is so highly praised on the Prog Scan message boards. But alas it does not come with that deinterlacing chip, but instead it comes with a new chip designed by Panasonic. So I guess we will wait until I can afford to drop about 200 bones for a good quality one. If only I could get a disability check. 🙂

Groan!!!!

Gentoo is driving me crazy. I finally got through all the building and I had a semi-operational system until I had to reboot so I could use the new kernel. Somehow my ethernet card isn’t being detected on boot. SOOO I rebuilt my kernel and added all the drivers that I could find that I thought would work with the card. So I rebooted again and it still can’t find my damn card. I don’t know what is going on. I’m beginning to wonder if this is worth all the work I have to go through to get this distro up and running. I have been reading on the Gentoo Forums that this distro when stripped down of everything that you don’t need can run on a 66MHz processor with 32MB of RAM. Now that is low-end. Now that I kinda know what I’m doing though I may start over and rebuild the whole system. I want to see if I can get my kernel under 1MB, right now its at 1.6MB so too big to fit on a floppy.

We didn’t do cardio today, some little old man ran up and jumped on the bike that I was going to get on while I WAS STANDING NEXT TO IT. So we just decided to come home early. Then we met Blake at The Sun Spot for tanning.

We are getting ready to eat some dinner, and watch Smallville. Yay new episodes!! Then maybe a movie or head to bed early. We can’t seem to get up early to go to the gym if we don’t get to bed before midnight. For instance we slept until almost 12:30 today cause we didn’t go to bed until almost 3 in the morning.

We finally got a decent rain shower today it needs to keep it up and rain every afternoon like it used to, get us out of this damn drought.

Am I a Geek or what?

Well I’m about half-way through my Gentoo install, I finished bootstrapping the system, and installing the base system. It took about 11 hours to build all the required parts, I still haven’t built my new kernel or any part of X or a desktop enviornment, maybe tomorrow.

Its motorcycle night on Discovery Channel, first Monster Garage was on, and now Motor Mayhem which is highlighting Jesse James’s West Coast Choppers in Long Beach, and then when this is over American Choppers is on. I saw the first episode of American Choppers last Monday and it was pretty kool. Its about a father and son business called Orange County Choppers in NY. After seeing one of Jesse James’s custom bikes I want one in a bad way. They go from 0-60 in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 140-150 mph. But the base price is about 40K for a stock model. Yikes!

Did pretty good at the gym today, I started using the Cable Crossover for upper body workout, I’m getting to where I can curl about 200lbs, and about that on the Lat Raise. Then we did an hour on the bike, I stepped up my difficulty level to 9 today. At level 8 my heart rate kept going down, and I was cooling off. So hopefully I can go up one level every other week or so.

Somehow when I put up the new Aqua5 theme it broke my IP/Stat tracker, so I had to dig through PHP code in between compiling Gentoo to get it working again. I nuked the data in the table that was in their so I was sure to see that new data was being inserted properly.

OK time to get a beer, all that typing about going to the gym is wearing me out. 🙂

Gentoo Part 2

Well I finally got my desktop to boot from the Gentoo link boot cd. I had to use the nofb (no frambuffer option). So far it is very involved. I had to set some flags in my make.conf file so that all files built on the system are optimized for my hardware. Right now I’m bootstrapping my system, and that means that it is building the GNU C library, compiler suite and other key system programs (binutils, gcc, gettext, glibc). The install guide that this process takes about 2 hours on and AMD 1200MHZ machine and I’m doing this on a Celeron 500. So this may take awhile. 🙂

So after this gets done building I have about another 10 hours of build time to look forward to. It still has to build the kernel, X, Gnome, KDE and all the other goodies.

Ooops I’m seeing a gcc error for an option that I put in my make.conf, I wonder if that is going to screw me up?

OK this is my uber-geek post for the day. Gotta get to bed soon so we can get up early and head to the gym, it is always way to busy in the afternoon.

UpdateIt looks like I’m gonna have to nuke my partitions and start over again, I totally neglected to include the USE= flags which is the whole reason I’m trying Gentoo. I’m not going to interupt the bootstrap build right now, I will just mess with it in the morning. It looks like this would be a good distro to load onto my laptop since you can build support for ACPI and APM into all applications. So maybe I could get Linux hibernation to work properly. 🙂

HAPPY EASTER!!!

Happy Easter everybody!

Had an early lunch today with the family at Texas Roadhouse. It was so early that I wasn’t in the mood for a steak and just had a salad instead but it was tasty. We tried to go to Best Buy afterwards but they were closed. Oh well, we’ll just go tomorrow. What’s one more day? My mom made Easter baskets for everyone, so Casey and I went by to pick up ours. There were lottery tickets and candy. Neither one of us won anything, but the candy was good. Never need an excuse to eat candy. We finally finished all of our laundry today so we won’t have to do that for awhile. I had a 3-5 page paper due tonight at midnight that I didn’t start on until 8. Actually turned in 5 pages and think I did pretty well. Only 2 more weeks of school left! Going to the gym in the morning….

Gentoo?

HAPPY EASTER!!!

I just got done reading the entire Gentoo Linux Install process. For those that don’t know about Gentoo it is the uber-geeks Linux distro, well next to Debian anyway. Gentoo is a roll-your-own linux distro where they give you three different levels of customization, Level1 is for the hardcore “I want everything to my liking”. Level2 is for “I’m not that smart but I know enough to hang myself”. And Level3 “I’m a Linux tool and I don’t know shit”. But after reading the install process it sounds really interesting. The entire distro is compiled from sources so it takes forever to install but you get to really know your system, plus you don’t get all the extra bloat that you get with most commercial distros that are out today. Now while I still love Mandrake a great deal this is kind of an interesting idea to me. Since I really don’t know shit about Linux (I just pretend like I do), this would be a good learning oppurtunity for me. The only bad thing is that I have those screwed up sound drivers that I have to use to get my stoopid Aureal soundcard to work. I’m sure it wouldn’t be that big of a deal though if I’m going to be doing everything else.

I got a Maximum PC magazine the other day that had a little article about how some motherboard manufacturers are using some screwed up recipe for capacitors on their mobo’s, and Abit was one of the main culprits. The article also said that if you send the board back they will replace the bad capacitors for FREE. So I was thinking about boking up my Abit BP6 (Dual Celeron) mobo and sending it back to them to get it fixed. I really love that mobo, and I was said that I couldn’t get it to work on my Linux desktop machine. It would be a lot more fun to play with an optimized SMP kernel then the stock one that came with Mandrake 9.1. So I will be looking into that real soon.

Not much else going on today. We were going to go by Best Buy and take Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets back because chapter 19 messes up on both our DVD player, and Jim’s DVD player, but they were closed. So now all we are doing is trying to get some laundry done so we have clean clothes to go to the gym with tomorrow.

We did good last week about going to the gym and working out. Since we only go Mon-Friday we ended up doing 5 days of cardio and 3 days of weight training. We may try to bump that up to 5 and 5. My abs aren’t hurting now after I do declined situps so maybe I can bust out a hundred of those or so, not all at one time, but maybe in 3 sets.

Mom and Dad are sending me a couple of bottles of Arthur Bryan’ts BBQ sauce in the mail this coming week so I can have some to BBQ with this summer. I may have to drive out there and buy a case of it if I could BBQ as much as I would like too. I would cook everything on the grill if I could.

“What that you want some scrambled eggs, well let me whip that right up for ya!!”

OK enough is enough. We gots laundry to do.

Brrrrrrrrrrr.

How did it get this cold? Weather.com is reporting that it feels like 35 outside. Yesterday I was wearing shorts for most of the day, and then tomorrow its supposed to be almost 60 again. Someone is keeping me from BBQing! But I’m still going to cook some strip steaks this evening. I have them marinating right now in the fridge. So we are going to head over to Kelly’s folks house here in a bit so I can throw them on the grill.

I still can’t figure out how to mount my External USB 2.0 HDD to my Mandrake 9.1 desktop machine. It shows up as /dev/sda1 but when I try to mount it I get an error telling me that I have a bad block or to many filesystems mounted, or something like that. I have tried messing with the setting in /etc/fstab, and /etc/mtab but no luck so far. I may just hook it to my PVR which is still running XP and try to share it out that way over Samba.

For some reason my laptop kept getting a BSOD last night while Kelly was playing some Java games on it. I couldn’t get her Powerbook to load the games in IE or Safari. I upgraded the Java packages on the Powerbook to 1.4.1 also, and that didn’t help either. It was probably coded with only Windoze IE in mind, and that just drives me crazy.

Its the weekend.

We didn’t get to bed until about 1:30 or 2 last night. So we didn’t get up until late. We finally made it to the gym at about 1:15 and left at about 3:20. So we got a good workout in today. We both did an hour on the bike every day this week, so we are going to try and keep that up.

Then we went tanning after we left the gym, it was very crowded today, I think we ended up waiting for about 25 minutes before we finally managed to get a free bed.

I have to get up and start cooking dinner here pretty soon, I may have to go get some beers to drink with chili. Mmmmmm chili.

Something New

OK I have a new theme that I put up called Aqua 5 so if you are not seeing it and want to check out out go to Your Account and set your theme there. If you not logged in though you should view the theme automagically. I also set up a Shoutbox. I can’t seem to figure out how to get URLs to work though. In the forums for the block it says do [url]http://www.linkhere.com[url], whatever that means. I tried it and it didn’t work. I kinda missed the Tag-Board so I figured I would put this up until I can find a better replacement block.

I’m finally starting to get a little tanned, but this is only my third day of going to the Sun Spot with Kelly.

Justin has been slacking latley and not been posting. Actually everyone has been slacking latley. Except for Kevin he made a quick post yesterday and posted some pics of Caylie. Somebody needs to post something, I’m really bored.

I’m really hoping that the forecast changes for Saturday, I really want to BBQ something. I have a slab of baby back ribs in the freezer, and a coupel of strip steaks. Mmmmmm ribs and beer 🙂

OK time to go to bed, we have to get up early tomorrow and hit the gym so we can do some laundry when we get home.

Not much to say

Hmm not much to say today. Casey and I slept in a little this morning so we didn’t go to the gym until this afternoon. We did weights and then an hour of cardio. Whew! It was quite the workout. I got on the starimaster for the last 10 minutes and did 41 floors. Afterwards, we were starving so we came home, ate a leftover chimichanga, took a shower, and then went tanning. Blake was supposed to meet us there but I don’t know what happened. Maybe he’ll be able to meet us tomorrow for tanning. We went to Hollywood Video and picked up a few rentals including: Enough (good, suspensful), Abandon (sucked, didn’t even watch the rest of it), and Super Troopers (haven’t watched yet). I didn’t have high expectations for any of them so maybe we’ll get lucky and two will be good. Getting ready to go to bed now. G’night.
