Broken

Brady’s fever finally broke this morning.  She was at 98.4 soon after waking and right before bed.  She seemed to be feeling much better today which was such a relief.  I monitored her temp throughout the day and I only ended up giving her more Tylenol at bedtime because of her teeth and hoping it’d help her sleep better.  She’s also back in her fleece footy pj’s and maybe that’s what caused her to get up early last night (being in too thin pjs)?  She’s still not liking the amoxicillin any more.  I have no idea what to do about this.  Her dose is 6ml (a lot) and half of it ends up down her neck and on her clothes.  I’ve tried reading and singing and honestly, she takes it best when she’s pissed off and crying.  I’m open to suggestions here…

I somehow ended up worrying unnecessarily that meningio toxemia or sepsis or something was going to come into play.  Well even the nurse practitioner’s diagnosis of possible roseola didn’t end up panning out (thankfully).  Brady still has some random freckling but I in no way would call it a rash.  Even though the NP didn’t say I needed to schedule a follow up to look at her ears again after she was done with the antibiotics (she did last time, so I’m assuming this time she forgot after consulting with other mums), I went ahead and scheduled it today.  I just want to be absolutely sure the ear infection is gone and there isn’t some random other illness at play.  Casey and I have been toying with an idea about her ear infection(s).  Is it possible that the dogs could have caused it?  Ear infections are caused by a virus which usually makes a baby present other symptoms.  In Brady’s case, we only knew because of the fever (we were chalking the fussiness up to her teeth – which the molars are making their way through the gums according to the NP).  You might say that dog’s have cleaner mouths than humans.  And you might say that our dog’s can’t even reach their bum to lick.  Well, they can’t reach their own bum, they can reach each others.  And Stoli has some pretty rotten gingivitis (she needs a cleaning) or something brewing and then Dude and his ears and who else knows what he makes friends with that’s on him too?  Ugh!  Let’s just put it this way, when they examined Dude’s tail last year to inspect the bite mark Stoli had left in it, they found ear bacteria…Just makes one wonder…  So anyways, Brady’s doing better and I did a few random errands today.  I still haven’t made it to the grocery store yet but she’s out of juice so maybe tomorrow’ll be the day.

I’m sure most of you have heard about the plane crash in Austin too.  This was not near us.  Well, not near near.  It’s near the Babies R’ Us we go to, but that’s like 15 miles away.  The whole thing is just a mess and hopefully traffic has calmed down by now so Casey can take the route home that goes by the site, thus avoiding the deer going the alternate route (the one he takes to work).

Fever

Brady woke up at 5 this morning burning up.  I thought it was just because her door was shut (as it always is) and that she was in fleece pjs (which she has been in 99% of the time this winter) so I started feeding her but she was so hot that she was making me hot.  I got out the thermometer and tested it three times and her temp was running between 102.6 and 102.8 each time.  We were out of Tylenol but gave her some Motrin and she fell back asleep for another couple of hours.  When she woke up at 7 her temp was still 101 but she was acting normal and playing and laughing and talking and eating.  I called the pediatrician’s office at 8:30 and spoke to the nurse who told me I could alternate Motrin and Tylenol and since she was still eating and behaving normally that we should stay at home.  They do want to see her in the office in three days if she still has the fever and no other symptoms to rule out a UTI.  At 9:45 I tried laying her down for a nap to no avail, she started crying right away.  Since I was still tired, her and I went back to bed and took a 3 hour nap.  I woke up before she did and had I not gotten out of bed she probably would have kept sleeping.  I checked her temp again and this time it was 103.8.  We had slept through when her next dose of Motrin was due so we gave her that and then put her in a lukewarm bath to bring her temp down faster.  Casey went to Walgreens before leaving for walk and got Brady some Motrin so she’s had a dose of that too and so far her temp has been staying down.  She’s holding steady at 99ish right now. Hopefully it stays that way!  It should be an interesting night.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Not too much going on around here lately. Yesterday, we went to the Hula Hut for lunch. My friend, Megan, from LA was in town to do the Austin 13.1 (half) marathon and thankfully Facebook kept us aware of each others goings on and we were able to meet up! The Hula Hut is a restaurant on Lake Austin that describes their cuisine as Mexiconesian and is owned by the folks that own Chuy’s. We ended up eating outside on the covered, heated patio and the food was so good! Megan brought with her a couple of friends that were also running the marathon with her – one that lives here now and goes to UT and another that lives in Seattle. Brady was so social, although a little less vocal than usual, and kept flirting with the guy from Seattle! It was great being able to catch up with Meg – I hadn’t seen her since we left LA five years ago! Hopefully it won’t be so long before we see her again!

Brady’s new car seat got here on Thursday but she didn’t ride in it until yesterday. Hopefully I can get a pic of her riding in it next time we’re out. On our way home from the Hula Hut, we swung by Target and I returned the other car seat (number two, we’re on number three for her big girl seat). I think this new one is gonna be a keeper but either it’s the new seat or she’s just getting too long cause I don’t think we’re going to be able to keep her rear facing for too much longer, unfortunately.

When we got home, Casey took down the exterior Christmas lights. Without incident or falling from the tree! So there’s a good chance he’ll put them up again next year!

Brady only ended up sleeping on the way home from the Hula Hut so we weren’t sure how she’d do going to Pluckers with James for dinner. But she did really well for most of the meal and it wasn’t until 7 (her bedtime) that she started getting a little crazy (although controlled). and woke up when we got here. But we ended up going to Pluckers with James for dinner and she did really well there too! We were sure she was gonna fall asleep on the way home and it wasn’t until we left Hey Cupcake (yum!) that she finally fell asleep – meaning she was asleep in the car for less than five minutes before we got back here. She’s still waking up around 2 or 3 and wanting to eat/come to bed with us. I always end up falling back asleep and then taking her back to her bed for a couple more hours (or until the sunshine is up). It might be time for those blackout curtains now.

Today was pretty low key. Casey and I really don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. We don’t exchange cards at any other time, so why on this particular day? Casey abhors the day, while I look at a little less disdainfully and could maybe use it as an excuse to eat out or splurge on dessert. Since we did both yesterday, tonight was just another Sunday. We did watch the first episode of The Amazing Race (TAR) and so far, it looks like it’ll be a good season. I picked my teams for TAR fantasy league earlier today and didn’t do too bad with my blind picks, as my teams came in first and third!

Miss Cakes

I’m sure you’re all here to read about Brady anyway so I’ll jump right in. Brady’s 13.5 months old now and has developed quite the personality. She’s definitely a mix of Casey and I where this is concerned.

I’m sure it’s normal but I’m not exactly thrilled that she’s decided to be a picky eater lately. You can give her a hamburger (cut up of course) at one meal but if you try to give it to her again at the next meal she’ll fuss until you take it away and present her with something else. Or you could give her pasta twice a day for several days and she could be perfectly content. There’s no pattern to what she likes/wants/needs! I used to think that she loved oatmeal and yogurt and would readily eat those. Not so much. She’ll still eat them both but only on her terms. I think the only thing she is guaranteed to eat is fishes (Goldfish). At least she’s getting one of her many needed wheat servings? We’re hoping this isn’t any indication on the type of eater she will be as she gets older. It’s definitely okay to have preferences but she needs to at least give some things a chance before spitting them out. Ideally this is just an age related passing phase and our good little experimental eater (she still experiments but mostly on what we’re eating and a lot of times when it’s spicier than I’d like her to have).

Brady’s been pointing at (gouging) eyes for awhile now but recently she’s started pointing at them when asked where they are. If you ask her where her eyes are, she’ll point to yours. I’ve been working on nose with her for some time now too and over the course of the last week she’s definitely starting to get the hang of it. Once she masters that, I’ll move on to mouth. Or maybe ears, since she likes squeezing the dogs’ so much.

I’ve also been asking her where Brady is and then pointing at her. This usually makes her start giggling but this afternoon when I asked her where Brady was (at different times) she would jab her finger into her chest. She also kind of says Brady but I’m not gonna call that one yet. She does say ball and if you ask her where her ball is (even if on the other side of the room or in her toy box) she’ll go find it. Yesterday she starting pushing the blue circle through the hole into her shape sorter. She only did it a couple of times yesterday and refused to do any other shape. Today, she did it several more times and also stuck her balls through the shape sorter too. It seems like she’s learning so much right now!

I’m trying not to worry too much that she’s not walking yet. That seems to be the one area she’s behind in but everything I can find online says she has until 18 months before we should worry and then we’ve got the preemie factor to consider (which I usually don’t). Ideally though, she’ll be walking by her 15 month pediatrician appointment. She’s onto me, because I’ve been grabbing ahold of her hands and then trying to let go and seeing if she’ll balance (and catching her if she doesn’t). But now she’s resisting even trying to walk holding my hands thinking I’m going to trick her. I guess I’ll just revert to more walking just holding her hands and see if that motivates her any.

Blogging Success and Failure

I just counted up all my posts in January – actually wordy ones, pictures, and videos altogether. I posted 19 times! I think that’s a record for me! February apparently is off to a slower start. I’ll blame it on Punxatawny Phil and his stupid predictions. By the way, does he ever *not* see his shadow?! I’m in the process of uploading the latest pics over to Picasa and You Tube so when that’s done hopefully I can do a proper post. Although honestly, there’s not much to say. It seems pretty common with Facebook that a lot of people spend less time blogging since their friends are updated on their day-to-day happenings and pics and videos are on there as well. But I know I still enjoying reading other people’s blogs so it’s worth the extra effort to make sure mine is up to date.

Words words words

I got an email today and we were talking about Brady’s vocabulary. I don’t know if I’ve posted her words on here or not but figured if I hadn’t, I probably should so here they are.

-Mama
-Dada
-pretty
-kitty (for Stoli)
-boy (for Dude)
-bad (at both of the dogs)
-bye

Bye is the newest addition to the list. She said it for the first time when I left on Saturday but she repeated it again when I said bye just now and she waved so I think she connects the two.  She also says what I think is baby but could be Brady or boobie.  I don’t know.  She also signs milk and more appropriately although sometimes interchangeably and always in regards to eating and drinking.  And if you ask her if she’s hungry, she’ll smack her lips!

Brady’s not making any indications that she’s going to walk any time soon but then again she could surprise us and be running in no time. Til then, super fast crawling, cruising, and climbing (even if it’s using a dog as a step to get on the couch) get her where she wants to be.
