Scrap Happy

In hopes of saving money, I went to Michael’s today and picked up some stickers and paper so I can begin on a new album. It’s hard for me to scrapbook at home because I don’t have a table where Stoli can’t reach what I’ve got set out. So hopefully I’ll have this album done within this year instead of taking 4 years like my wedding album.

Stoli is such a smart dog! I’m sure you’re thinking, yah you would say that – she’s your dog. But she really is smart. She lays in the bathroom when I’m taking showers and stretches out on the floor. A lot of times when she’ll stretch she’ll hit the buttons on the scale and it’ll beep and she just looks at it but doesn’t pay it any more attention. Today she realized how to make it beep and kept beeping it over and over again and trying to bite it when it beeped. She’s also been more of a circus dog lately. Casey and I call her that a lot because she’s a high jumper and twirls in the air when she does this. Her newest thing is jumping on Casey’s lap when he’s sitting on a the closed toilet seat, well apparently this started a bad habit because she jumped on me today *while* I was going to the bathroom – ouch. Sharp nails on bare legs. More proof that I have the legs of a 5-year old because of all the bruises and scrapes from her.

Nothing much to say…

I can’t say we have a lot to say right now. Casey’s been working lots of overtime this week and I’ve been applying for part-time jobs that will afford me the capability of taying home with Stoli for long periods of time or places she can with me too – nothing yet though. At the urgence of my professors, I’ve submitted some of my writing to magazines for pieces so we’ll have to see if anyone accpets, that’d be a nice way to supplement and build up a down payment. Especially since Casey would be able to set his mind at ease that I’m at home with Stloli and that nothing will happen to her and I’m here if the A/C were to give out. We put in a contract for a house on Sunday and found out today we got it but the seller ended up wanting revised terms so we turned down the revised terms and backed out of the contract so here’s hoping we can stay in the same place or find something else by the end of this month.

Good news is that we got the rest of our insurance money from receipts we returned showing that we had purchased items that we had stolen and ended up paying more. Well at least that’s money towards a house. I’m getting really fed up already wiht this whole house thing. We had to *bid* on the house and our *bid* ended up being $25K more than they were asking which is more than we thought we offered but whatever, you get the picture and someone was already waiting to take over the offer if we backed out. Ugh, we need a more affordable market, i’m already bored – and really sweaty (it’s a swampy aka humid 90 degrees).

Registration

Today begins registration for fall classes. I have to take 5 this semester and 3 next semester in order to graduate at the end of next semester. The end is in sight! I’m taking: Business Communication, New Communication Technologies and Society, Cultural Geography, U.S Environmental Politics and Policy, and American Security Policy. It should be another stressful semester. I’m on my way to yoga now…

Time is Running Out

We put in our 60 day notice today for our apartment so the house hunt has gotten even more serious. We’re hoping, keep your fingers crossed. It’ll be SO nice to be in a house when my family comes out for the holidays! Casey’s working extra hours this week so we can bank some extra money and I’ve been looking for a part-time job throughout the week so I can not totally abandon Stoli but still make some extra cash too. Don’t know if it’s gonna happen though and I’ve started looking at temp agencies again. I put together our receipts last night for our insurance so hopefully we should see the rest of our robbery settlement money soon – that’ll help too. Since Casey’s working late it’s just me and Stoli fending for ourself with nothing on TV, maybe I’ll watch The Firm for the first time. That’s all for now…

Catching Up

We’ve been catching up on our movie watching this weekend. Yesterday we watched ‘In Good Company’ and ‘Kinsey’ (very slow, not going to buy), today we’ve attempted to watch ‘Thirteen Days’ and ‘Finding Neverland (couldn’t make it past 45 minutes of either of them) and now we’re watching ‘Team America’ which is proving to be the funniest of the bunch.

Belated Anniversary

We just got back from our official anniversary dinner at The Melting Pot. Casey told them when he made reservations that what we were celebrating and we scored a secluded booth that brought us lots of envious glances. Our first experience with fondue was a good one! For the cheese course we picked some mexican spicy dish but plan on bringing a can of hot Rotel if we go back cause it wasn’t to our usual level of spiciness. We ordered California salads which came with a tasty raspberry vinegarette and not some sugary sweet nastiness like they serve at Guiseppe’s. Then we got the surf n’ turf for our entree. After all that food before I was only able to eat two pieces of lobster and a piece of steak (which was awesome, very tender) before I was too stuffed to move. I ended up doing the rest of the “cooking” so Casey could take advantage of this rare opportunity to eat red meat. I think we’re gonna go try to find some buffalo meat so we can partake in the goodness of bloody meat again. It was very romantic, especially with the secluded booth. To my disappointment I was too stuffed to get the $14 desserts they had. I told Casey that they had built a Melting Pot in the Springs on Pikes Peak (meaning Ave., St., Rd., etc.) but he thought I meant ON Pikes Peak and was like oh, that’s a good location. 😉

Nothing’s on the agenda for tomorrow or Monday so we’ll probably catch up on the 6 movies we have yet to watch that are either from Netflix or borred from Rachel. We’re part of the majority that prefers watching movies at home versus at the theater and I’m sure we will even more so after we get a new home theater setup.

Happy Anniversary to Us and Happy Birthday to Emily!!!

It’s our anniversary today…4 years and we’ve been together 5 in August. How time flies! We’re keeping our anniversary low key just doing wings and beer at our Thursday favorite – The Buffalo Wing Factory. We’re gonna celebrate for real on Saturday and go to the Melting Pot for some fondue. I’m excited! We’ve only had fondue once before and I made it so this should be fun. I’m hoping that everyone will be out of town this weekend and there won’t be huge crowds everywhere. We’ll see. Now that we’re an old married couple I’m fielding more baby questions. Our family will be expanding again soon but it’ll be a brother or sister for Stoli (another bully) to keep her company and keep us even warmer at night.

Today is also our cutiepie niece Emily’s birthday today. One year old! Nicky can you believe you were able to parent a girl this long?! Nicky posted pics on her site so if you don’t believe how cute she is – go check them out.

Finally the 2nd half of the story

Everyone went to bed Saturday night at 11 and I had to get up at 1 am to make it to the airport in St. Louis as well as give myself time to return the rental gar, gas it up on the way out of Keokuk AND before I returned it, as well as give myself extra time for my directional handicaps. Randi made me promise to get her up before I left and we said our goodbye. 🙁 I got gas in the car and bought a bottled vanilla Starbucks coffee (come into play soon) and other stuff.

As you can imagine in a town of 11,000 people, at 1:30 in the morning there are very few people on the road so I was playing with the lights trying to figure out how to get my high-beams on. I was probably flashing them on and off for a quarter of a mile and there was maybe one car that passed me the other way. Going down the road a little bit further, I noticed a cop car behind me and I get pretty freaked out with cops anyway – let alone in a small town and when I wasn’t speeding or doing anything wrong. I became acutely aware that this cop was following me, he followed me through a small town (Hamilton) turned right behind me (still no flashing lights) and proceeded to follow me through the 35mph zone and into the 45mph zone. The entire time I’m not going one mile over the posted speed limit.

As soon as I crossed from the 35 into the 45 he flashed on his lights and pulled me over. He came over to my window and asked for my license and proof of insurance. I explained that it was a rental card and the only thing I had was my license and my USAA card (has my member number on it but doesn’t list coverage) and I asked why I had been pulled over. He told me (and not too nicely, I might add) to look at my dash. I did and said, “I wasn’t speeding.” He said, “No, but you’ve been flashing your lights at oncoming traffic for miles now. Didn’t you see all the cars flashing their lights to let you know you had them on?” Uh no. Apologetically (I probably said sorry 10 times) I told him it was a rental car and I was trying to figure out how to turn the high-beams on. He says, “I need you to step out of the vehicle.” I oblige thinking he assumes I’m drunk and is gonna make me walk a line or something. Then he tells me to get in his car with him so he can run my license and the plates on the car. I hesitantly agreed to leave the car, keeping the lights on and the engine running. My cell phone was charging and he wouldn’t let me grab that or my purse. Warning bells are going off in my head at this point as I’m freaking out even more. One county over from us (Prince William), men are posing as cops with cop cars and wig wags and everything, pulling young, single women over and then raping or abducting them. No one knew exactly where I was and no one would suspect I was missing for hours until I didn’t show up at Dulles as expected. I obediently followed the cop, not wanting to delay my trip any further and figured this was the easiest way to leave there *especially* without a ticket.

I reluctantly climbed into the passenger front seat of his patrol car but kept the door open in case I needed to quickly escape. I’ve heard about the police doors and how they won’t open from the inside, although that might just be in the back. He proceeded to ask me if I’d been drinking. Shocked, I told him no. He’s still running my license and moving it back and forth to make sure the license is authentic and hasn’t been tampered with. (I’m sure this cop has probably never seen a license outside of the midwest and was skeptical about it from the moment he saw it.) He then asks what I was doing before I got in the car, where I was going so early in the morning, and what I was doing out there from Virginia in the first place. I, trying hard to stay poised and calm, told him that I was out there for a graduation and that my best friend was graduating from the nursing program at Southeastern Community College in Keokuk. I told him that before I started driving I was sleeping and had only been up for a short while giving me enough time to get gas and some coffee before he pulled me over. He says, “So you’re sure you haven’t had anything to drink?” “No, I haven’t.” “Well were you around people who were drinking?” “No, we were all sleeping.” Then he starts badgering me, “You’re *sure* you haven’t had anything to drink?” “Yes, I’m sure” (I think I would remember if I snuck out from Randi’s house, went to a liquor store I didn’t know was there, bought some unknown alcoholic beverage, drank it, went back to sleep, woke up at my scheduled time and said goodbye Randi without her noticing that I had been drinking alcohol in a Mormon household.). He’s like, “Well I smell alcohol on you. So if you say you haven’t been drinking then what do I smell?” Grrr. Baffled I tell him, “I just bought a bottled vanilla Starbucks and drank all of that before I was pulled over. That’s the only thing I’ve had other than some pretzels.” The information on my license came back clean (of course). He then goes on to tell me, “I know what I smell and I smell alcohol. I know you’ve been drinking. I’m gonna need for you to do an eye movement test.”

Before starting he asked if I had contacts in or had any eye conditions he should know about. I told him that I had just had LASIK two weeks prior. He says, “So you don’t have contacts in then?” “No, I had surgery on my eyes. That’s something I thought you should know.” He then proceeded to get out a pen and make me follow it with my eyes without moving my head. Not a problem I followed it for like 5 minutes and then he’s like well has you doctor ever told you that you have something amblyopia. I told him, “No, I used to have an astigmatism before having eye surgery.” Eye care professional that he was, he said, “No, an astigmatism is an imperfection in the shape of the eye. Amblyopia is where your eye twitches.” “No, I don’t have that but my eyes are still recovering from LASIK. I’m not even supposed to be doing eye movement exercises when in my yoga class.” Then he decided I was even more drunk, “Yoga? What does that have to do with this?” I explain, “Before moving into the yoga poses during a yoga class, we warm up each body part including the eyes. Because my eyes are still recovering from LASIK, I’ve been advised not to participate or strain my eyes while they are healing by doing the eye movements.” Still not believing me, he was like, “Well how long is the recovery period supposed to last?” I told him my eyes are still recovering for at least 3 months and will still be changing. And then goes about writing me a warning and tells me again how dangerous it is to flash my lights at oncoming traffic and one last time, “Are you sure you haven’t had anything to drink tonight?” He gives me the ticket and tells me I can leave.

I eagerly fled his car and walked swiftly to my rental car, a haven after that ordeal. As I moved back onto the empty highway, he followed me before deciding that it wasn’t worth his time (and was probably out of his jurisdiction) and turned around the other way. I have yet to write a letter to the Hamilton Police Department expressing my outrage and fear over what happened. I don’t know if anything will come of it but I’ll have done my part in calling attention to this particular cop.

Yesterday I had my one month follow up for my eyes. My vision is now 20/10! According to my doctor this is the “threshold of human vision.” He slapped my leg and was shocked that my eyes had improved even more and seemed pretty impressed and pleased over my increasing vision. Casey’s benefiting for my super x-ray’esque vision when we’re driving and he uses my surgery as an excuse not to have to drive because we need to test drive my new eyes. I’m happy with everything, just wish it would dry up so my allergies wouldn’t be so bad.

After hearing how good the finale of “CSI” (the original) was (directed by Quentin Tarantino) we watched it. While being one of the better episodes we had watched, CSI needs to take direction from NBC shows “Medium” and “Las Vegas” about how a finale should end…with a cliffhanger making you eagerly await the premier in the fall. Officially all the shows we watch are on hiatus till fall. We TiVo’ed Rob & Ambuh’s wedding but have yet to watch it. We’re getting desperate on things to watch so post on the tag board if you have any suggestions. “Lost” is already scheduled to be recorded.

We’ve made no plans for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend (the one this month, Casey). We were thinking about going down to Panama City Beach for our anniversary and the holiday weekend but decided to save that extra money for our house hunt. We’ve decided to get a mortgage payment at the same amount we pay for rent we’re going to have to (a) win the lotto, (b) win The Amazing Race, or (c) have a wealthy relative (do we have one of those?) take pity (or favor) on us. We were also invited to Hillsville, VA (6 hours southwest of Fairfax) with Rachel and family for camping but although, I haven’t asked Casey yet I’m sure he would want to insist on flying if we did go. 😉 Since we can’t BBQ here we’re even more eager to have a home where we can BBQ for next Memorial Day.

After finishing this book – Stoli and I are off to run errands.

Drumroll please…

It’s taken me awhile to muster up the patience and wits to write this post because I knew it’d be so long and even still I don’t think I can post everything tonight because it’d go on forever and you know, I really don’t want to stay up THAT late. So anyway a brief overview of everything that’s gone on and more frequent updates now that school’s out and I’m in town. I promise. 😉

I finished up all of my assignments before I left for Iowa last Friday (more on that later). This semester really kicked my ass and I was pleased when the final grades were posted yesterday (not posting +s, -s, but just straight letters cause I can’t remember not because i’m embarassed). The results are as follows: (1)A and (3) Bs. Alright I can deal with that! Especially after all the trauma from this semester. I’m glad I’ll have a brief reprieve before buckling down for the last two grueling semesters.

As Justin posted, Wal-Mart and Netflix DID join forces. As a former Netflix subscriber and current Wal-Mart subscriber I was pleased to come back to Netflix at my discounted Wal-Mart rate…for a year anyway. We debated between Netflix and Blockbuster since Wal-Mart will no longer be renting DVDs and decided to go back to reliable Netflix. Although in L.A. a lot of DVD managed to get lost in the mail but that might have been our incompetent mailman. Good news is that my queue gets transferred over too.

The real estate market is out of control everywhere (well, except Iowa. Casey and I were considering buying a subdivision there. LOL) We read in our lease and found out that we’ll only have to pay a month’s rent penalty to break our lease (which was supposed to be up in Decemeber) so getting in on the real estate game NOW is a SERIOUS consideration. Rachel’s mom, Wendy Flowers (for those in the area that need an agent), will be helping us find something close to Rachel (we hope) and we’re going down there this weekend to start scoping out the area and houses!

Yoga info following: Yoga is awesome! I can’t believe I didn’t find this sooner. i seriously need to start working on it more and I can definitley see improvements in my body already. ESPECIALLY my abs. I’m considering taking the next class in this series IF we’re still living in the county and haven’t bought a house yet. It’s challenging but at the same time relaxing and centering if that makes any sense.

I watched a couple of movies yesterday and have to say I wasn’t impressed with either. ‘Win a Date with Tad Hamilton’ although starring yummy Josh Duhamel (aka Danny) lacked any real story and was just puffery. ‘Vanity Fair’ on the other hand I couldn’t even make it through even with my love for Reese (sorry Alison). She tried to pull off an unconvincing British accent (although I admit I couldn’t do any better) and it was just well, boring). We still have several DVDs to watch: The Stepford Wives, Finding Neverland, In Good Company, Thirteen Days and Hero. I odn’t know if we’re gonna end up watching Star Wars or not in the theater but the new Batman shows promise.

Finale week: The Amazing Race finally ended last week and we were seriously disappointed to see annoying couple Uchenna and Joyce win. Casey and I are HUGE Rob & Amber fans (who won SO many more legs than everyone else) so we were yelling at the TV for the injustice of it all! Survivor made up for it though. After Stephenie got voted off (our fav) we rallied behind Tom and he didn’t disappoint. It’s nice to actually see the strongest person on the tribe win instead of getting picked off in favor of the followers. The Smallville finale was a mini-action movie and Lana and Clark finally professed their love to each other. The whole witch storyline with the Teagues finally ended at long last. Lex is finally turning evil which is an expected turn. It wasn’t as good as the last finale but Smallville needs to prove itself since this season left something to be desired and especially since the brainiacs at the WB have decided that it would fare well againt Survivor (??). I was hoping that it would move back to Tuesdays and free up our Wednesdays for Lost which we plan on catching up with during the summer because EVERYONE raves about it.

No wings this week. 🙁 Beer made a nice accompaniment to my ice cream but other than that, I was spared from fixing dinner once again.

Stoli is doing good. She’s learned to attack feet and will bite Casey’s on demand now. She realizes that I am much to sensitive and fair of a being to attack. 😉

I haven’t updated on Iowa because more happened than I had planned and it’s gonna be quite the ordeal to post without making it pages long. Stay tuned…power hungry cops, Mormons, and strippers…wait no alcoholic Mormon sleepwalking to come…

High Class White Trash

Casey came up with the first part of the post and I did the second chosen from because we all walked up to Safeway today (2 blocks away) for some beer (Michelob Ultra in bottles if you must know). We were walking back and laughing at what people must be thinking seeing us walk such a horizontally challenged (she weighs 46 pounds as of today) bulldog and carrying beer. Thus Bulldogs & Beer. However, we’re obviously high-class in our white trashiness because English Bulldogs ain’t cheap and we’re drinking bottled lite/low-carb beer. Anyways…thus far we’ve had a pretty movie intensive weekend. Right now we’re finishing up Blad 3 and we’ve already finished Meet the Fockers, Elektra, and Spanglish. I feel content in knowing we’ve watched all of these and doubt we’ll purchase any of them although they were all around 3 of 5 stars (good call, Justin).
